Requirement: Cat6a for security cameras and WAPs

Date: 12-01-2023

Did you know that Australian Standards call for Cat6a cabling for all cameras and wireless access points? This falls under AS 11801-6 (Distributed Building Services)

It is incredible to see how many installers use Cat6 (or even Cat5e) to install cameras and WAPs. Although some might think that there is no need to use Cat6a for these devices, one must also understand that not using Cat6a is choosing to be outside Australian Standards. Adhering to Australian performance standards is not mandatory. However, going outside the standards carries risks. If a camera or WAP fails to perform at a critical moment, not using products to Australian Standards may cause significant problems.

Another consideration is that of “fit for intended purpose”. AS 11801-6 states that Cat6a must be used for distributed building services (WAPs, cameras, etc), and AS/NZS 14763-2 states the link must be identified as either RP1, RP2, or RP3 depending on the current flow. If the installation does not adhere to Australian Standards (AS 11801), then a customer could reasonably question whether the installation is fit for the intended purpose. This could cause issues for all stakeholders involved, depending on who made the judgment call on using C5e or C6, instead of C6a.

CERTECH carries and recommends bare copper, Cat6a cabling for all cameras and wireless access points. We also take a moment to remind installers that Australian standards require 26AWG (0.4mm) patch leads to be used on all PoE requirements. This falls under ISO/IEC 61935-2
