What is the difference between Shielded and Unshielded Jacks?
The primary difference in performance between shielded and unshielded jacks lies in their ability to mitigate electromagnetic interference (EMI) and radio frequency interference (RFI). Here's a breakdown:
Shielded Jacks:
Shielded jacks are equipped with additional shielding components, such as metal enclosures or foil wraps, around the conductors. This shielding helps to minimise the impact of external electromagnetic and radio frequency interference, which can degrade signal quality and potentially disrupt network performance. Shielded jacks are typically recommended for environments with high levels of electromagnetic interference, such as industrial settings or areas with numerous electronic devices.
Unshielded Jacks:
Unshielded jacks lack the additional shielding components found in shielded jacks. While they are generally more cost-effective and easier to install, unshielded jacks may be more susceptible to electromagnetic and radio frequency interference. However, in environments with low to moderate levels of interference, unshielded jacks can still provide reliable performance.
Shielded jacks offer superior protection against electromagnetic and radio frequency interference, making them ideal for demanding environments where signal integrity is crucial. Unshielded jacks are suitable for less demanding environments and can offer a cost-effective solution without sacrificing performance in situations where interference levels are minimal.
